We are making progress in the backyard! Together with the neighbors we have removed the old fence, as well as the little concrete poles that were surrounding the border. We also had to dig out the strong! big! roots of the ivy which were right in front of where the new fencing needed to be placed. We thought that the ivy originated in our back yard, where it covered the entire border, but actually it started on our neighbors side where it covered the old fencing, went over to our side of the fence, was left alone - and then covered the entire border. As it turned out it also partly kept the old riggety fencing in place.
After we removed the fencing, and dug out all the roots, a new fence was placed - hardwood stakes and fairly cheap fencing in between. It has made a massive difference in how the back yard looks and feels. There is more space now, and it also feels like there is more space.
Clearly there is still a lot to do back there, and I have been preparing a border in the backyard, which has mainly involved me digging a lot. An issue is that our neighbors yard and our backyard are partly on different levels - way in the back our garden is quite a bit higher. Eventually I want to make an even higher raised border there, which would also include a little pond in there. I'll try to make some drawings of the idea later and post them here. I'll have to figure out how to build a good retaining structure that also takes into account that level difference between us and the neighbor. Firtst however I have to remove some unwanted tiles and retaining materials, which means more digging.
