Fruits of 2020 - February 18 2021

Last week we had some real winter weather with temperatures ranging from -6 to -15 degrees Celsius, and a deep cover of snow. I proteced the not-so-hardy plants in the front yard with a layer of horticultural fleece. The insulation layer of snow also helped, and the plants seem to have survived.

While the winter settled in good, I sowed my first seeds for spring and summer 2021: Sweet peas, chili peppers, snapdragons, and delphiniums (Dutch: Siererwten, chili pepers, leeuwebekjes en riddersporen). The weatherpeople say that starting tomorrow, spring is underway... Very much looking forward. Plans have been set in motion for the back garden: In March we'll get a new fence behind the raised beds. I will plant fruit there, particularly blackberries, and blackcurrants. I planted tiny blueberry plants in the fall, I hope those will grow up a bit this spring. I will also plant some climbers, most likely roses and star jasmin.

Winter sceneries, but spring is coming!

There already is some fruit in the garden, and we had a decent harvest in 2020. Below, I'll share some photo's of this, and the rest of the harvest of 2020.

The first harvest of strawberries, and one of the last harvests of strawberries of 2020.

These are logan berries, the fruits of the only plant that survived the balcony of the apartment we used to live in. This is the first time we got a decent harvest! Loganberries are a tasty hybrid of blackberries and raspberries.

chili pepper plant

fresh chili peppers

dried chilli peppers

We sowed chilli pepper plants very early in 2020, and these were our most succesful ones, 'Criolla Sella'. They had a very fresh flowery taste. This year we have sown various types of peppers.

garlic

freshly harvested garlic

elephan garlic cloves

This is part of our garlic harvest; two types - one I forgot the name of and wasn't that good taste wise (top image), although it looked good. The other is elephant garlic, which is huge, and also very delicious. You can see well how big it is from the last image, which are single cloves from that garlic.

kobocha pumpkin Winter Sweet

summer carrots

We harvested 5 pumpkins, two honey nuts and three kobocha pumpkins, one of the latter you see in the photo's above. I sowed what was left of some carrot seeds from 2019 and I got some good ones out of it, here are the best two.
